The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Central Philippines State University (CPSU) conducted the โCapacity Building on Sustainable Bamboo Processing, Product Preservation, and Value-Added Craft Makingโ training for grassroots attendees.
The five-day capacity-building training equipped participants with practical skills and technical knowledge on bamboo processing, preservation, and product development to promote sustainable livelihood opportunities and resource management.
Twenty participants from assisted farming communities within the CPSU reservation, DTIโs Shared Service Facilities (SSF) Program beneficiaries, and qualified Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were capacitated with practical skills and technical knowledge in bamboo processing, preservation, and product development.
With bambooโs strategic importance as one of the most abundant and renewable natural resources within the university reservation and surrounding communities, DTI and CPSU aimed to address the gaps in local producers' knowledge regarding how to maximize bamboo's value, implement proper treatment and preservation techniques, prevent borer and fungal infestations, and extend the shelf life of bamboo products.
The training included lecture-demonstrations on bamboo harvesting and post-harvest handling; treatment methods (Borax-Boric Acid); preservation techniques and best practices; and finishing techniques, including sanding, sealing, and varnishing.
Corresponding hands-on activities followed each lecture-demonstration to promote more hands-on learning for the participants
Trainees were also trained on tools, materials, and workplace safety practices; basic bamboo cutting, splitting, and weaving techniques; basic craft making; intermediate craft making (trays, wall decor, tissue holder, and picture frame; and product finishing and detailing.
In partnership with DTI, CPSUโs Extension and Community Services Office, College of Agriculture and Forestry, and Production and Enterprise Development Office, they worked on the realization of the five-day training to promote rural development while revitalizing the craftsmanship of indigenous materials.
The program underscores the need to sustainably harness raw materials, develop products using technology to improve quality and longevity, and package products to compete in the global market.
